2000 Watchtower Inner Scheldt
Commissioned by the municipality of Bergen op Zoom, the Netherlands
The idea for this lookout was prompted by the enormous scale and by the rigid linear urban development design of the quay along the Inner Scheldt. In relation to this huge amount of space, my intervention serves to create a spot with more human proportions and one which, in this situation, elicits contrasting forms of behaviour: sweeping around, moving upwards and zooming in. A lookout with a telescope is a classic boulevard attribute. Its function is voyeuristic. In the summer bathers and surfers can be studied, in the autumn birds, in the winter skaters. The lookout also intensifies the perception of the strange artificial relationship between culture and nature in this area, which is almost surrealistic. The shape of the lookout reminds one of shipbuilding. The upward circular movement echoes the rounded sweeping motion of the telescope.
