First Remembrance Ceremony, Gramsbergen, 16 June 2012 The object of the National Firefighters’ Monument is to commemorate those firefighters who were killed during their work for society and to show respect for and appreciation of their profession. The monument belongs to and is meant for all firefighters in the Netherlands and is intended to supplement memorials which have been put up in local communities and fire stations. The monument was designed by the artist Jeroen Doorenweerd and on it are the names of all the 95 firefighters who have perished since 1945. Minister Opstelten addressed some 600 guests, with many surviving relatives amongst them, and expressed his hope that the monument would provide an opportunity for them to remember their loved ones. In his speech, Mr. Opstelten remarked that: “The monument is, however, more than a place of remembrance. It is also a place at which society pays its respects to fallen firefighters and to the Fire Service as an institution. They are, in my eyes, heroes, heroes of our time!” Jeroen Doorneweerd has created a new symbol for the Fire Service at the monument. “The Arch of Honour”. This is formed by two jets of water from fire hoses which meet at a height of 10 metres to form an arch. During the ceremony, Minister Opstelten (Security and Justice) turned the water on for the first time to honour those firefighters who lost their lives while carrying out their work. The Committee of the National Fire Service Monument Foundation had asked all the Fire Brigades in the Netherlands to perform their own Arch of Honour at the same time as that of the First National Remembrance ceremony at Arnhem. Many fire brigades complied with this request and the Arch of Honour was performed at many fire stations and posts.
